The Bulgars merged with local Slavs in the 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. It had to struggle against the Byzantine Empire to retain its independence, but was invaded by the Turkish Ottoman Empire in the 14th century. It regained its independence in 1878, but backed the losing side in both world wars, and fell under communist Russian control from 1946 to 1990. Bulgaria entered into negotiations witht he EU in 2000, and is also moving towards integration with NATO.
