Part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austrian Empire until 1918, when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats to form Yugoslavia as it was renamed in 1929. Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, but it took four years of sporadicand bitter fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. Joining the EU may hopefully bring long lasting peace to this area.

Many of these have been privately produced. A privately produced pattern set of British euro coins has already been produced, and met with intense demand, despite almost negligible marketing. Original priced at around €40, these have changed hands for over €250 on e-bay.
